Charges laid in multiple commercial break-ins

We have charged three individuals in relation to a series of smash-and-grab break and enters that have been occurring since the beginning of 2025.

On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at approximately 2:45 a.m., we were called to a vape store located in the 900 block of Heritage Drive S.E., for a report that offenders had smashed the front door of the business and stole various items from inside.

The offenders fled the scene in a Honda Civic, however, approximately 15 minutes later, the vehicle was located by patrol officers and three suspects were taken into custody. 

Upon further investigation and a review of evidence collected from the scene, the suspects were also connected to several other commercial break and enters, where individual(s) smashed through the front of the business to gain entry, including:

  • On Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, at approximately 4:45 a.m., at a vape store, located in the 4600 block of Bowness Road N.W.
  • On Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025, at approximately 3:40 a.m., at a pharmacy, located in the 0 to 100 block of High Street S.E.
  • On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at approximately 5:30 a.m., at a vape store, located in the 5300 block of 17 Avenue S.E.
  • On Friday, March 14, 2025, at approximately 5 a.m., at a bar, located in the 1400 block of 52 Street N.E.

Two of the suspects were also connected to a shoplifting that occurred on Monday, Jan. 13, 2025, at a business located in the 300 block of 36 Street N.E.

Cory Mitchell KING, 51, of Calgary, has been charged with five counts of break and enter, and one count each of theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and flight from a police officer. KING was remanded in custody and will next appear in court on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

Gloria Michelle BIGNELL, 31, of Calgary, has been charged with three counts of break and enter, and one count each of theft under $5,000 and possession of a controlled substance. BIGNELL was released from custody and will next appear in court on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

Marnie JOHNSTON, 50, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of break and enter. She was also issued a summons under the Traffic Safety Act. JOHNSTON was released from custody and will next appear in court on Friday, May 9, 2025.

“In each one of these incidents, the suspects not only stole products from local Calgary businesses, but caused significant damage in doing so,” says Acting Staff Sergeant Jake Debolt of the CPS District 4 General Investigations Unit. “Our District 4 Break and Enter Team did outstanding work collecting key evidence and tying these individuals back to previous offences.”
