Charges laid in drug trafficking operation

We have seized a significant amount of drugs and laid several drug and firearm-related charges following a three-month investigation.

Beginning in December 2021, Calgary’s Organized Crime Enforcement Team, with the assistance of Edmonton’s Gang Suppression Team, began investigating a number of individuals believed to be involved in drug trafficking in Calgary and Edmonton. The investigation culminated in several search warrants being executed on two residences and several vehicles between Wednesday, March 2, 2022, and Friday, March 4, 2022, in Calgary and Edmonton. In Calgary, residences were located in the 100 block of 24 Avenue S.W., and the 1100 block of 11 Street S.W.

Police seized the amounts of methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine with a street value of approximately $380,000 and more than $22,000 in cash.

The following individuals have been charged as a result of this investigation: Mintesinot Tibebu SHIBIRU, 22, Amdeyesus Bekele GEDECHO, 34, Sirack Zemuie TESFAI, 23, all of Calgary, and Tysean Antonio Michael WAWRYK, 27, of Edmonton, were all charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and production of a controlled substance. SHIBIRU has been additionally charged with possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000, uttering a forged document and several breaches of a release order.

We continue to investigate and further charges are pending.
