Charges laid in distraction theft investigation

Two people have been charged with fraud in relation to a distraction theft that occurred in the city’s northeast in August.

At approximately 6:20 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, in the 9600 block of Harvest Hills Boulevard N.E., a man was approached by an unknown man and woman stating they needed money for gas. It is believed they offered the man jewelry as collateral for the cash loan. The victim gave them cash under the belief he would be reimbursed, but the following day the victim was unable to contact the man or woman. He subsequently reported the incident to police.

An investigation was launched and with support from the RCMP, two suspects were successfully located in Olds, Alta. and taken into custody. As a result, Constantin MICLESCU, 29, and Claudia SIRBU, 27, both of Scarborough, Ont., are each charged with one count of fraud under $5,000. They will next appear in court on Friday, Oct. 10, 2025.
