Charges laid in Crescent Heights shooting incident

We have charged a woman in relation to her role in a shooting incident that resulted in a shelter-in-place order for Crescent Heights residents last week.

On Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025, police were attempting to apprehend a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large after he removed a court-ordered electronic monitoring device. Due to the man’s history of violence, multiple police resources had been attempting to safely arrest him.

At approximately 3:40 p.m., the man exited a vehicle in the 500 block of Crescent Heights Road N.W., and fired several shots into a residence in an attempt to gain access.

After being unable to enter the first residence, the man, and a woman who had been travelling with him, broke into a second nearby residence. Several minutes later, the Tactical Unit arrived on scene and contained the residence, at which time the suspect fired several shots at officers from the residence.

A shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents, which remained in place for several hours.

At approximately 5 p.m., the woman surrendered to police and was taken into custody. At about 7:10 p.m., police confirmed the suspect was deceased inside the residence. It has since been confirmed the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No other injuries were reported.

After further investigation, it has been confirmed the man and woman had no connections to either residence on Crescent Heights Road N.W.

Monica GONZALEZ, 32, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of break and enter. She will next appear in court on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025.

“Individuals with violent histories and ties to organized crime pose serious risks to public safety, and this incident highlights how volatile situations can become,” says Staff Sgt. Ben Lawson of the Organized Crime Unit. “These suspects are often determined to avoid capture, which can lead to unpredictable and dangerous situations. In high-risk arrests, like this one, investigators work closely with our operational resources to prioritize community safety and ensure we have the resources in place should an incident escalate.”

After further investigation, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) deemed this incident out of scope and CPS will retain the ongoing criminal investigation that led to this incident.
