Charges laid in attempted armed home invasion

We have charged one Calgary man in relation to an attempted armed home invasion that occurred earlier this month in the southeast community of Deer Ridge.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, two men attempted to forcefully enter a residence in the 1600 block of 137 Avenue S.E., while armed with firearms. A resident was home at the time of the incident and immediately called police. The suspects fled the area prior to police arrival without gaining entry into the home.

No injuries were reported. This is believed to be a targeted attack.

As the investigation progressed, police were able to successfully identify one of the suspects.

As a result, on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, police executed a search warrant in the 200 block of Deerview Drive S.E., resulting in the arrest of one of the suspects.

Scott Robert PATON, 42, of Calgary, is charged with one count of break and enter with intent to commit robbery with a firearm, and one count of theft under $5,000 in connection to an unrelated matter.

PATON is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024.
