Charges laid in Arbour Lake homicide

Charges have been laid in the death of a Calgary teen who was found deceased in the northwest community of Arbour Lake last week.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., on Thursday, March 31, 2022, emergency responders were called to the greenspace, located behind the 100 block of Arbour Meadows Close N.W., for reports of an injured male. Upon arrival, the male was located deceased. An autopsy took place on Friday, April 1, 2022, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the victim as Jal Acor JAL, 16, of Calgary.

Our homicide unit worked around the clock to canvass the Arbour Lake neighborhood to collect any CCTV footage, spoke with potential witnesses, and worked closely with Jal’s family, friends, and extended community. We learned about Jal’s passion for basketball and football, how he lit up the lives of everyone around him, and how devastating this loss has been for everyone who knew him.

Yesterday, Tuesday, April 5, 2022, a search warrant was executed at a residence in relation to this investigation, and a male youth was taken into custody.

The suspect, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with second-degree murder. He will appear in court tomorrow, Thursday, April 7, 2022.

“We would like to thank Jal’s family, friends, and his community for trusting us to find answers. We could not have done this without their help, and without the help of the residents of Arbour Lake,” said Homicide Unit Staff Sergeant Sean Gregson. “While we are thankful we are able to bring answers to his family, this is a sad conclusion to an already tragic event.”
