Charges laid following officer-involved shooting

One man has been arrested and charged in relation to a shooting that occurred in September 2023. The man was arrested during an incident that resulted in an officer-involved shooting yesterday, Wednesday, Oct. 18.

At approximately 2:45 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023, a driver called police to report a shooting involving two vehicles that occurred on westbound Glenmore Trail, near 37 Street S.W. Both vehicles fled the scene prior to police arrival and no injuries were reported.

Approximately 30 minutes later, police were called to a residence located in the 100 block of Seton Passage S.E., for reports that a man had been shot while parking his vehicle. Upon arrival, officers located one man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital in serious condition. It is believed that the suspect fired multiple rounds during the shooting in Seton, with stray bullets striking four surrounding residences, before fleeing the scene in a stolen vehicle.

Investigators determined that these shootings were connected and worked to identify several potential suspects. It is believed that both the offenders and victim are associated to rival organized crime groups in Calgary, and that the victim was targeted due to this conflict. Given their demonstrated violence and history of court-ordered firearm prohibitions, investigators engaged the Tactical Unit to conduct the arrests of the suspects.

On Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, while attempting to arrest two suspects, an officer-involved shooting occurred at approximately 2:40 p.m., in the 5700 block of Falsbridge Drive N.E. One suspect was pronounced deceased and one police officer was transported to hospital in stable condition. A second suspect was taken into custody, and upon his arrest, officers located a loaded handgun in his possession. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting and no additional details can be released about this incident.

Today, Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, officers executed a search warrant on the suspect’s vehicle, which resulted in the seizure of two additional loaded handguns. Photos of these two seized handguns are available on The City of Calgary Newsroom.

Thanh NGUYEN, 25, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of attempted murder, discharge a firearm with intent, possession of stolen property over $5,000, unlawful possession of a firearm in a vehicle, unlawful possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition, possession of a weapon obtained by crime and possession of a restricted firearm contrary to a prohibition order. NGUYEN will next appear in court on Friday, Oct. 27, 2023.

This investigation remains ongoing.
