Charges laid following officer-involved shooting in Temple

We have charged one man in relation to several calls for service in northeast Calgary that resulted in an officer-involved shooting.

At approximately 6:55 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, we received multiple calls from the community of Temple, relating to a man with a firearm engaging in erratic behaviour, including attempted carjacking and assault.

It is believed that between 6:50 p.m. and 7 p.m. that evening, the man had three altercations with different people or groups of people in the area near Temple Drive N.E., while brandishing an imitation firearm.

In the first altercation, it was reported that a woman was parking her car near her residence in the 6900 block of Temple Drive N.E., when a man started approaching her and pointed a firearm at her. The woman was able to safely get inside her residence and was not physically harmed.

In the second incident, two men were standing outside a residence in the 0 to 100 block of Templebow Way N.E., while a third man, along with his child and mother, sat inside a vehicle that was parked nearby. It is believed the same man from the first incident approached the two men standing outside and pointed a firearm at one of them, while demanding the keys to the vehicle. When the victims told him they did not have the keys, the man hit the gun against the window of the vehicle, before leaving the area.

In the third altercation, a man was walking from his residence towards his vehicle that was parked near Temple Drive N.E., when it is believed the same man from the other incidents approached him and demanded the keys to his car. The victim turned to walk away and was struck with an object, believed to be an imitation handgun. It is believed the suspect again demanded the victim’s keys, and when the victim said he did not have them, the suspect struck the man with the imitation firearm again. The victim was able to run away and call 911.

These incidents appear to be random, and none of the victims are believed to be known to the suspect.

At about 7 p.m., officers arrived near Temple Drive and 58 Street N.E. and encountered the suspect, resulting in one officer discharging their service weapon. The suspect was shot in the leg and taken into custody. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A handgun-style pellet gun was recovered from the scene.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting and no additional details can be released about this incident.

As a result of the investigation into the initial 911 calls, Akol Acuil PIOK, 36, has been charged with three counts of robbery, two counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of failure to comply with a probation order. He will next appear in court on Monday, March 4, 2024.
