Charges laid after months-long extortion investigation

A man has been charged in connection to multiple extortions that occurred in the city’s northeast.

In September 2025, a woman contacted police to report multiple extortion attempts and threats to her safety and well-being that occurred throughout 2024. Members investigated the series of reported incidents and in December 2025, launched an operation to apprehend the offenders.

It is believed that on six separate occasions between August and October 2024, the victim was contacted by the offenders, who were known to her, and they demanded she provide money and valuables. If she did not comply, she was threatened that she would be subjected to various acts of violence.

As a result of the operation, Jaspreet GILL, 37, of Calgary, has been charged with six counts of extortion. He will next appear in court on Friday, April 10, 2026.

Also, as a result of the operation, but unrelated to the extortions, Harpreet GILL, 28, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000, one count of fraud under $5,000 and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle. She will next appear in court on Monday, April 6, 2026.

“We understand how deeply these incidents affect not only the victims, but also the broader community and their sense of safety,” says Staff Sgt. Geoff Gawlinski of the Calgary Police Service General Investigations Unit. “We want the public to know that our officers are committed to thoroughly investigating these crimes and will continue to hold those responsible accountable.”

Although this incident targeted a member of the South Asian community, at this time, this incident appears to have occurred in isolation and is not connected to any other extortions recently reported. In this case, the victim and suspects were known to each other.
