Calgary Transit pilots new bench styles to enhance accessibility and rider experience

Calgary Transit is testing two new bench styles – stainless steel and concrete – at select CTrain stations. This new design is part of our ongoing commitment to building better spaces and a more accessible transit system for people of all ages and abilities. The design and materials of the new benches are more durable and easier to maintain, giving better value for taxpayers.

"Our goal is to choose a bench that provides comfort to customers, meets our technical requirements, and can last approximately 10 years under frequent use in tough conditions," said Chris Jordan, Manager Transit Service Systems, Calgary Transit. "We're asking for feedback from customers on these shortlisted options, and we hope to hear from a variety of users, including customers with limited mobility. Their input will guide our decision."

These new benches are corrosion-resistant, making them better able to withstand everyday use and Calgary’s changing weather. They are designed for easy repairs, reducing downtime and minimizing future expenses. Concrete benches, which are one of the bench styles, have already seen success from The City of Calgary installing them along the Bow River pathway.

As part of this initiative, we are inviting customers who use Marlborough, City Hall, and Brentwood stations to participate in an online survey through a QR code. They can try the benches and share their feedback on comfort, usability, and appearance. Their feedback will be used to help us select a style that’s most accessible for everyone.

The result will be a bench that’s more inclusive, longer-lasting, and cost-effective.
