Calgary to start accepting cannabis store applications Tuesday

The City of Calgary recently prepared bylaw amendments that will facilitate the retail sale and consumption of legalized cannabis in Calgary. Cannabis store applications can be made online or in person starting Tuesday, April 24 at 8 a.m. MT.

“The City will start accepting applications for cannabis retail stores on Tuesday,” said Brandy MacInnis, Senior Special Projects Officer. “But no decisions on these applications will be made until the date of cannabis legalization is known.”

The City is encouraging businesses to apply online to avoid the likelihood of line-ups on April 24. Information on the application requirements and a link to the online application can be found on the cannabis store page at Calgary.ca/cannabisbusiness.

Applicants can create an online myID account immediately and will be able to view the online application on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 8 a.m. MT.

Businesses can also apply in person at the Calgary Municipal Building (800 Macleod Trail S.E.) on the third floor starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. Applications will be reviewed based on the order in which they are received.

“We are encouraging businesses to use the online application; City staff will be assisting in-person applicants as quickly as possible, but there are physical constraints,” said MacInnis.

Information on the regulations for land uses, permits and application requirements for Cannabis Stores and other cannabis businesses are available online at Calgary.ca/cannabisbusiness.
