Calgary Recreation and Shaw Communications expand Public WiFi to all City of Calgary recreation facilities

The City of Calgary with Shaw Communications Inc., has announced free public WiFi access is now available at 27 Calgary Recreation locations across the city including the most recent addition, the Calgary Soccer Centre. A full list of facilities offering Public WiFi is available on Calgary.ca/publicWiFi.

“Calgary is a connected community, and Recreation is committed to providing customers with access to online services and information,” says Heather Cowie, Regional Manager with Calgary Recreation, “Our facilities serve as community hubs and this partnership with Shaw Communications creates more ways for people to connect to their community and their world.”

“Recreational centres play an integral role in bringing communities together,” said Greg Pultz, Vice-President, Operations, Shaw Communications. “The partnership with the City of Calgary to provide free public WiFi through the Shaw Go WiFi network helps keep residents connected to the world and everything in it while saving their mobile data.”

The City of Calgary awarded Shaw Communications Inc. the contract to provide public WiFi in City-owned locations in December 2013. There are over 40 City facilities connected to public WiFi including recreation centres, arenas, golf courses and CTrain stations. The service is available to any member of the general public and does not require a Shaw account.

The most popular recreation location based on guest connections is the Southland Leisure Centre, with over 160,000 connections to the network since the launch of public WiFi in 2014. There have been over 3,000,000 connections to the Calgary public WiFi service in total, with total data usage of almost 4,000,000 MB.

The City and Shaw Communications Inc. continue to work together to expand the public WiFi service and provide Calgarians with greater access to technology and City services.

Calgary residents and visitors can access the Shaw Go WiFi network on their WiFi enabled devices by selecting ‘ShawGuest’ from the list of available WiFi settings and following the on-screen instructions to connect. Shaw customers will be able to automatically log onto the WiFi service through the Shaw Go WiFi network.
