Calgary police targeting payment card scammers

The Calgary Police Service Cyber Investigations Team is seeking public assistance to locate four individuals wanted in relation to an ongoing operation that has been targeting credit card fraud activity in Calgary.

The operation, called Operation Crushed, was designed to address fraudulent credit card spending in Calgary. Investigators in the Cyber Investigations Team (CIT) worked closely with other areas of the Service, retail stores, and with payment card providers to identify potential frauds, collect evidence and lay charges. This operation began in May 2017.

To date, four files have been investigated and 19 charges have been laid against four individuals.

Throughout the operation, investigators encountered cases of offenders cloning and using store gift cards as well as using counterfeit payment cards. In many of the cases, offenders would try multiple different payment cards that were declined before being successful in purchasing an item with the fraudulent card.

In relation to this operation, the following individuals have been charged:

  • Dmitri BARBU, 36, of Calgary, has been charged with 13 counts of unlawfully using credit card data.
  • Kirill BARDINE, 31, of Calgary, has been charged with two counts of unlawfully using credit card data and one count of possession of property obtained by crime. He is currently wanted on warrants and is described as Caucasian, 180 pounds, 5’9” tall, with blond hair and hazel eyes.
  • Andrei Anatolyevich BYKOVETS, 35, of Calgary, has been charged with two counts of unlawfully using credit card data. 
  • Ilya Olegovych ZIANCHURIN, 27, of no-fixed-address, has been charged with one count of unlawfully using credit card data. He is currently wanted on a warrant and is described as Caucasian, 5’9” tall, 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
