Calgary police officer charged with domestic offences

The RCMP have charged one of our officers with assault and mischief to property following an alleged domestic incident in a neighbouring municipality.

We were notified of the charges in the early morning hours of Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, after the off-duty incident occurred the night before. As is common practice, the RCMP notified us to make us aware of the situation.

The charged member has been with us for 13 years and is now on administrative leave, with pay, until his status can be properly reviewed. As is often the case in domestic incidents, his name is not being released to protect the identity and privacy of the victim.

Domestic violence is a serious issue and we offer many supports to our members to try prevent it. Our Psychological Services Section has licenced therapists available to members and their families, as well as outside professional help if specialized marriage or relationship counselling is required.

Anytime a member is involved in a domestic incident in Calgary, the case is also automatically investigated by a detective in the Domestic Conflict Unit to ensure that the cases are dealt with consistently and appropriately, including making sure any victims are connected to community supports.
