Calgary Police Commission holds February regular meeting

The public and media are invited to participate in the February virtual regular meeting of the Calgary Police Commission on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022, from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Regular meetings include a public portion where Commissioners discuss a variety of topics with the Calgary Police Service leadership and hear from the public. There is also a private portion where Commissioners and the Service discuss police conduct complaint investigations, personnel issues and any other sensitive matters that cannot be discussed in public.

The agenda for this month’s public meeting includes:

• A report on how the Service is addressing pharmacy and cannabis store robberies
• An update on the impacts of the pandemic on the Service
• An update on the anti-racism work underway by the Service
• A general update on crime trends in Calgary

A discussion on the police shooting this past weekend is also expected, though there are limitations on what can be discussed in public because the incident is currently under investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team. Details that can be released about the incident were provided yesterday by investigators and the Service.

Members of the public can register to participate in the meeting by either making a presentation or asking a question, however, the maximum number of participants have already registered to speak at this month’s meeting. Anyone wishing to provide input to the Commission also has the option of providing a written submission.

The Calgary Police Commission is a body of community members appointed by City Council to provide independent citizen governance and oversight of the Calgary Police Service on behalf of all Calgarians.

To protect the political neutrality of the police, Alberta’s Police Act requires that the police chief report directly to us and that we give direction to the Service through the chief, police policies, monitoring of the complaints process, and approval of how the police budget is spent.
