Calgary kicks off #ExperienceDowntownYYC

In support of local businesses and Calgary’s economic recovery, The City of Calgary is launching #ExperienceDowntownYYC to remind Calgarians of all that Calgary’s downtown neighbourhoods have to offer.

“In a year of reinvention and new possibilities, there’s no better time to explore downtown Calgary and experience the people, businesses and places that make up the heart of our city,” said Jennifer Rempel, general manager of the Calgary Downtown Association and representative for Calgary’s downtown business improvement areas on The City’s Downtown Strategy team. “Calgary’s downtown business improvement areas and neighbourhoods are diverse, eclectic and vibrant and we want to welcome Calgarians back downtown as we get back to work, start connecting with friends and building new experiences and memories.”

Our ask of Calgarians is when they come downtown, they share their favourite experiences and support their favourite downtown businesses by using #ExperienceDowntownYYC and spreading the word to their fellow Calgarians.

Whether it be a quest for dim sum in Chinatown, patio hopping in the Beltline’s Blox, finding the perfect outfit on 17th Avenue or checking out new street art popping up in the Downtown Core and Beltline, downtown Calgary is the place you can explore, find new experiences and make new memories. Calgary’s downtown business improvement areas – Downtown Calgary, Chinatown, the Beltline, Victoria Park, Fourth Street, and 17th Avenue – are a diverse community of restaurants, pubs, shops, personal services and parks and outdoor spaces.

The City is focused on supporting downtown revitalization and reinvention because a thriving downtown means a thriving Calgary. The City’s Downtown Strategy team is working to create a more thriving downtown community that moves beyond the traditional office-based downtown central business district and toward a dynamic, vibrant 24/7 centre of our city.

“A thriving downtown where people want to live and be, and where businesses want to set down roots, means a thriving Calgary,” said Thom Mahler, The City’s Downtown Strategy program lead. “This means helping to support businesses, working with our downtown partners and encouraging Calgarians to come downtown and experience all that our downtown communities have to offer. Supporting our local downtown businesses is one way everyone can contribute to our downtown’s future as we come out of these tough economic times.”

The City’s Downtown Strategy team is leveraging the collective efforts of The City and its public and private sector partners to respond to prolonged economic challenges, and capitalize on opportunities that will create jobs, drive economic recovery, and revitalize and transform the downtown. We are working to address the challenges downtown is facing and set the downtown up for success down the road.
