Calgary Fire Department responds to structure fire in Varsity

Just before 5:00 this morning Calgary 911 received a call from a neighbor with reports of smoke and noise coming from a garage, The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) was dispatched to the 1200 Varsity Estates RD NW.

On arrival CFD found a 2 story single family dwelling fully involved in smoke and fire and called a working fire. An aggressive fire attack was started with ongoing searches of both the source home and the neighbors on each side. Fire crews were also put in place to ensure the exposed home were protected from heat and flame. 5 residents from the source home were safely evacuated as well as 2 from the neighboring home on the left. The source home has been significantly damaged by fire and will be uninhabitable, the residents of neighboring homes will be displaced temporarily. Fire crews are continuing to manage hot spots and monitor air quality prior to allowing residents re entry. The CFD investigator is on scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire, fire crews will remain on scene for safety.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Calgary Police Services (CPS) are on scene assisting with safety and wellbeing of area residents. No injuries to residents or first responders have been reported.

ATCO and Enmax are also on scene controlling the flow of utilities in the area.
