Calgary Fire Department Responds to House Fire in Coventry Hills

Shortly before 4:10pm, fire crews responded to the 100 block of Covington RD NE for a fire. Initially the call was classified as a fence fire and quickly escalated to a 2-house fire. While on route the crew observed heavy dark smoke and flames and called a 2nd alarm for resources. 

On arrival crews quickly deployed hose lines to apply water to fire spreading between the two homes while another fire crew connected a fire hydrant. 3 Adults and 3 children self-evacuated from the two homes and no injuries were reported. CPS attended and provided traffic control while Emergency Health Services (EHS) also attended to provide medical support. ATCO and Enmax arrived on scene and helped shut off utilities to both properties. After initial knock down of the fire, crews checked for hot spots in the roofs and walls of both homes. CFD Fire Investigators attended and confirmed that the fire originated in between the houses and will continue their investigation this week. This fire is not suspicious and appears to have originated on the outside and in between the homes. Fire crews assisted occupants with retrieval of valuables and rescue of a fish and tank. All occupants will be displaced as a result of the significant damage to both homes, some are staying with family while others are being supported by Red Cross.

Calgary Fire crews have responded to several 2 alarm fires over the past couple weeks. Currently there is nothing suspicious to connect these incidents and numerous investigations into cause are on-going.

Improper disposal of smoking materials is the leading cause of outdoor fires in Calgary. To help reduce outdoor fire risks, Calgarians should make an effort to properly dispose of smoking materials.

It is recommended to:

• Never put out cigarettes or smoking material in flower planters, peat moss, your lawn or garden.
• Use a deep, wide, sturdy metal container with a lid, filled part way with sand or water that should be emptied regularly.
• Ensure all butts and ash are out by soaking them with water prior to putting in the trash.
• Never discard your butts by throwing them off of your balcony, or out of your vehicle window.
