Calgary Fire Department Responds to a Fire in Beddington

On March 1, 2023 at approximately 8:30 PM ,the Calgary Fire Department (CFD), responded to the 100 block of Berkley Rise in the northeast community of Beddington Heights. On arrival firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the basement window of a two  story detached residential dwelling. The occupants of the home had self-evacuated prior to CFD arrival.  Firefighters made an initial knockdown through the basement window with a transitional attack prior to entering the structure. Fire crews located the seat of the fire in a basement bedroom. The fire was quickly extinguished as crews simultaneously searched the home and determined that all occupants had safely escaped.  In total, seven adults escaped the fire, unfortunately several pets perished including one dog and four cats.

The fire caused significant heat and smoke damage throughout the home and all occupants will be displaced.  AHS assessed some of the residents, there were no reported injuries to occupants or firefighters on scene.  ATCO and Enmax were on scene shutting off utilities to the home and Calgary Police assisted with perimeter control.

Fire crews will be on scene for several hours extinguishing hot spots and assisting the fire investigator.  The origin and cause of the fire is being investigated.  The CFD would like to remind Calgarians of the importance of working smoke alarms and having a home escape plan for your family.  Working smoke alarms save lives.
