Calgary Fire Department respond to 2 alarm structure fire in NE

At approximately 7:45 this evening Calgary 9-1-1 received reports from an alarm company of a possible structure fire. The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) was dispatched to the 1200 block of 64 Avenue NE.

Enroute a 2nd  alarm was called due to the heavy volume of smoke and to ensure adequate resources were on scene. On arrival crews were met with  large volumes of smoke coming from a large commercial warehouse.  An aggressive fire attack was initiated while crews made entry into the building to begin a search for workers.  An aerial platform was needed to gain access to the roof, ventilation holes were cut into the roof to release heat and pressure and provide an opening to attack the fire. The ambient temperature, the heat of the fire and the building construction were all factors while fighting this fire.  Both external fire attack and the  internal sprinkler system brought the fire under control.

There were no reported injuries to workers however 1 firefighter was transported by Alberta Health Services (AHS) to hospital with heat exhaustion for observation.

Calgary Police Services (CPS) were on scene to assist with traffic control and scene safety.

The CFD Fire Investigator is on scene working to determine the cause and origin of the fire. Fire crews will remain on site for the remainder of the night on watch.

The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind citizens that have photos, video or information regarding this fire, especially prior to CFD arrival on scene , to please email piofire@calgary.ca
