Calgary Fire Department Fights Multiple House Fires

At approximately 12:20 pm today, Calgary 9-1-1 began receiving multiple calls reporting a house on fire in the 800 block of Citadel Way NW.   The first arriving fire apparatus reported that two homes were fully involved in fire and called for a 2nd Alarm.  Crews on scene immediately began an aggressive interior attack on the homes in attempts to bring the fire under control and search for any occupants.  Due to the size of the fire, additional staffing was required, and a third alarm was struck.  The rapid spread of the fire and deterioration of interior conditions resulted in the decision to move to a defensive exterior attack on the fire.  At the height of the fire, twenty fire apparatus were on scene.  The source home and primary exposure home sustained substantial damage and will not be reoccupied in the immediate future.  In addition, several other homes were damaged by the high levels of radiant heat. One adult male is still missing at the time of reporting and is presumed to have fallen victim to the fire. Conditions inside are preventing firefighters from completing a search of the basement.

While crews were working at the house fire in Citadel, a second house fire was reported in the 400 hundred block of Templeby Place NE.  First arriving crews at the second event reported a working fire and quickly brought the fire under control.  No injuries were reported.

Investigators from both the Calgary Fire and the Calgary Police are on scene presently working to determine the origin and cause of the fires at both scenes.

The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind all Calgarians of the importance of having and practicing an escape plan, if your home is on fire.  In addition, the CFD would like to stress the importance of having working smoke alarms on all levels of your home as well as inside each bedroom and to to ensure they are checked regularly.
