Calgary Fire Crews Respond to South East for Tragic Townhouse Fire

At approximately 07:25 on the morning of Thursday, February 2, 2023, Calgary fire crews were dispatched to Penbrooke Meadows S.E. for reports of a fire in one of the townhouse units on Pensville Close. A resident smelled smoke and alerted authorities. An attempt was made to check the room suspected of having the fire but the door was locked.

When fire crews arrived on scene, they  forced entry into the room where the fire was and found an unconscious unresponsive male with significant burns. He was quickly brought outside and care was transferred to EMS paramedics. Firefighters assisted with CPR in the ambulance and en-route to the hospital. Tragically, the patient succumbed to his injuries.

On scene, firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, containing it to the room of origin.  Damage from the fire was limited to the contents of the room with some minor smoke damage to the upstairs hallway.  Firefighters on scene state they did hear smoke alarms that had activated as a result of the the fire. There was no smoke alarm inside the room where the fire originated.

Fire investigators and CPS arson detectives are on scene and working together. This is standard protocol with all fatality fires. This fire is not being considered suspicious and is Calgary's second fire fatality of 2023.
