Calgary fire crews respond to north west kitchen fire

Fire crews responded to a house fire in the 100 block of Silvercrest Crescent N.W. at approximately 2:20 p.m. today, after a neighbour called 9-1-1 to report smoke coming from a nearby home.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered visible smoke and quickly declared a working fire at a single-family bungalow.

One occupant attempted to extinguish the fire using a portable fire extinguisher and was assessed on scene for smoke inhalation. They did not require hospital transport.

The fire caused significant damage to the kitchen and extended through the main floor of the home. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The fire is believed to be accidental and is not considered suspicious.

Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms were present in the home and activated as intended, alerting those nearby and supporting a timely response.

A Calgary Fire Department investigator remains on scene to confirm the exact origin and cause of the fire.

The Calgary Fire Department reminds all Calgarians of the importance of:

• Installing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas.
• Testing alarms monthly and replacing batteries at least once a year. Replace alarms when they get near their expiry date.
• Having a portable fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen, knowing how to use it (PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep), and never putting yourself at risk.
• Making and practicing a home escape plan with everyone in your household.
