Calgary Fire Crews Respond to Ammonia Leak in the SE Community of Lynnwood

At approximately 7:15 pm on Monday, September 8, 2025, Calgary 9-1-1 received a call for an ammonia alarm at an arena facility in the 2000 block of 69 Avenue SE in the community of Lynnwood. 

Upon arrival, Calgary Fire Department (CFD) crews found patrons and staff evacuating the facility as per their protocol.  No injuries were reported from staff or patrons, which is attributed to the fast-acting arena staff, who followed their emergency response plan.

After ensuring that all staff and patrons had evacuated, Calgary Fire Department Hazmat crews entered the building, found, and investigated, determining that there was an active ammonia leak.  Crews monitored the wind and created a safe zone around the structure, closing off 69 Avenue SE in the 2000 block to maintain a safe distance for the public while crews worked to mitigate the hazard.  No homes or business were affected, and no residents were required to evacuate their homes.

Specially trained CFD Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Technicians used specialized protective equipment to enter the structure, isolated the leak and began ventilating the building.  Crews worked with the facilities refrigeration contractor to ensure that the system was made safe while further repairs are planned.

Seven fire apparatus attended with 18 fire department personnel including fire crews and CFD Hazmat crews.  The Calgary Police Service (CPS) assisted with blocking off the road, while the hazard was mitigated.  Alberta Health Services Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was on scene to ensure the safety of the public and fire crews.

A small number of fire apparatus remain on scene as of 9:45 pm while workers repair the system.
