Calgary Fire Crews Respond to Ammonia Leak in the NE

At approximately 2:45 pm on Sunday, August 4, 2024, Calgary 9-1-1 received simultaneous calls for both a smell of ammonia in the area and an ammonia alarm at a multi-use recreation facility in the 11900 block of Country Hills Link NE.  Upon arrival, Calgary Fire crews found patrons and staff evacuating the facility as per their protocol.

Calgary Fire crews made entry and assisted patrons with evacuating. Calgary Fire Department Hazmat crews entered the building, found, and investigated, determining that there had been an ammonia leak.  Crews isolated the leak and began ventilating the building so that patrons and staff could retrieve their belongings.

Facility staff worked with Calgary Fire crews to escort patrons back into the building to change and to gather their belongings.  Once the patrons and staff were taken care of, Calgary Fire crews worked with the building operators and contractors to fix the issue.

Twelve fire apparatus attended with 26 fire department personnel.  The Calgary Police Service (CPS) assisted with blocking off roads in the area, while the hazard was mitigated. Alberta Health Services EMS was on scene to ensure patron, staff, and first responder safety.  A small number of Fire crews remain on scene as of 6:00 pm while workers continue to repair the system.
