Calgary Fire Crews Fight Two Alarm Industrial Fire in the South East

At approximately 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, Calgary 9-1-1 started receiving calls regarding an industrial fire in a metal recycling yard located at the 3400 block of Odgen Road S.E. Enroute, fire crews could see a large plume of black smoke while leaving the fire station and called for additional resources. Upon arrival on scene, they found heavy dark smoke and flames coming a large pile of crushed vehicles within the compound. Due to the large volume of smoke and flame, the fire was upgraded to a second alarm for additional resources. 

Fire crews set up numerous Aerial Ladder apparatus with elevated water streams, as well as ground-based nozzles to surround and extinguish the fire. Once safe, crews used heavy machinery, operated by site staff, to pull apart the large pile of vehicles with the goal of completely extinguishing the fire. 
There were no employees on site at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. At the height of the incident there were 19 fire apparatus and 44 fire personnel on scene.  Calgary Police Service also assisted with blocking off roads in the area. 

There was a significant smoke column that was visible from many areas of the city including the Stampede grounds. Calgary Fire Department Hazardous Materials Technicians monitored the air both around the fire scene as well as throughout adjacent parts of the city to ensure there were no hazards to the public. 

The fire was brought under control within two hours and was completely out within three hours.
