Calgary Fire Crews Fight South East Strip Mall Fire on MacLeod Trail

At approximately 6:20 on Thursday morning, June 20, 2024, Calgary 9-1-1 started receiving calls from commuters reporting thick dark smoke coming from a business in a strip mall at the 9200 block of MacLeod Trail S.E.  On arrival, fire crews were met with fire inside the bulk food business  with flames coming from the roof. Firefighters gained entry into the business and started a multi-faceted  fire attack which successfully kept fire from spreading to the neighboring businesses. 

Nobody was found inside and no injuries were reported.  The fire is believed to have started on the inside of the business and burned its way through the roof and into the parapet (a barrier that is an upward extension of a wall at the edge of a roof).  Neighbouring businesses have some smoke damage however fire damage is limited to the business of origin. A Fire Investigator is on scene to determine the exact origin and cause of the fire.  Anybody who has photos, video or any information about this fire is please asked to send it to piofire@calgary.ca

The Calgary Fire Department would like to thank citizens who were impacted and delayed during their commute this morning for their patience and cooperation.  Fire incident commanders at the scene estimate the water used at this fire to be in the area of approximately 20,000 litres.

“A charged hose line is a literal lifeline for our firefighters who are inside a burning building searching for occupants and doing fire suppression” says Acting Fire Chief  Debora Bergeson.  The CFD is very grateful for all of the water conservation Calgarians  and residents in surrounding communities have  done so that we have a safe and continuous water supply for exactly these types of emergencies. Public and firefighter safety is paramount.
