Calgary fire crews fight North Mount Pleasant house fire

At 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, Calgary fire crews responded to a report of a house fire one block from the Mount Pleasant (#7) fire station.

While performing daily apparatus checks at the station, a firefighter smelled smoke and so the crew began driving through the district to try and locate its source. Shortly after, a caller to 9‑1‑1 reported the house fire, providing the exact location.

On arrival, firefighters encountered smoke coming from the bungalow with significant flames inside, which initially appeared to be on the main floor but were actually originating from the basement. Due to the intensity of the blaze, incident command upgraded the response to a second alarm, bringing additional resources to the scene. 4th Street between 27th and 29th Avenue N.W. was closed for some time by Calgary Police Officers to allow fire crews to safely lay multiple hose lines without being impeded by traffic. After a thorough search, no one was found inside the home and no injuries were reported. Utilities to the house have been shut off and damage to the house is extensive. Fire crews successfully prevented fire spread to neighbouring residences.

A Calgary Fire Department fire investigator is on scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire. The house was vacant and had a “For Sale” sign on the front lawn.
