Calgary fire crews fight downtown apartment fire

Shortly before 6:00  in the morning of Thursday, September 01, Calgary fire crews were called to an apartment building at the 800 block of 6 Street S.E. due to the activation of the fire alarm system. A resident also called 9-1-1 to report smoke in the hallway of the fifth floor coming from a suite several doors down.

Fire crews arrived on scene and found a working fire with heavy smoke in a unit on the fifth floor. Firefighters also found one patient just outside the source suite with injuries related to the fire. The patient was  quickly removed from the building and care was provided by fire crews until EMS arrived on scene to take over medical care. EMS transported one patient to an area hospital.

A total of 22 residents were evacuated however others in the building,  due to the amount of smoke in the hallways and mobility challenges , were told by firefighters to shelter in place. Fire crews went suite to suite and floor by floor to check on residents , answer questions and assure them of their safety. Fire crews assessed the air quality, checking for CO (carbon monoxide) levels and then allowed evacuees back into their suites.

The suite of origin sustained fire and smoke damage with some additional smoke damage to the fifth floor hallway.  Fire investigators have been called to scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
