Calgary Fire Crews Attend Multiple Incidents Overnight
On September 22nd, 2024, at approximately 0200 AM the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) received a 911 call for a fire within a residential house in the community of Wentworth SW. Upon arrival in the 0-100 block of West Coach Place SW, the first arriving fire crew found flames coming from a basement window at the rear of the house. The two residents had self-evacuated from the structure, but a cat was still missing inside. Fire crews performed a quick attack from the exterior before entering the structure to search for the cat, verify no other occupants were inside, and to completely extinguish the fire.
Fire crews rescued the cat and reunited it with the residents. Crews ventilated the structure and ensured that there was no additional fire hazard. Damage from the fire was limited to the basement room of origin with smoke damage throughout the house resulting in the occupants being displaced tonight.
The Calgary Police Service attended to control traffic in the area, while Alberta Health Services EMS was on scene to ensure occupant and firefighter safety. Crews from ATCO and Enmax were utilized to isolate the gas and electrical utilities.
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by a CFD Fire Investigator. Crews will remain on scene through the night to ensure scene safety.
During this incident, Calgary Fire Department crews in the Southeast responded to a significant vehicle collision involving a passenger vehicle which drove into the side of a residential attached garage in the 100 block of Sunlake Way SE. The single occupant of the vehicle was not injured, however the collision caused significant structural damage to the garage which required the Calgary Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team to attend. CFD's Technical Rescue Team worked with the on scene fire crews to stabilize the structure, while removing the vehicle. The Technical Rescue crew then stabilized the garage with wood shoring to ensure that it would not experience further collapse. Due to this work, the house's occupants will not be displaced.
The Calgary Police Service and Alberta Health Services EMS both attended the scene.
The Calgary Fire Department reminds all Calgarians to have a fire escape plan, including an agreed upon meeting place in the event of an emergency within the home.
