Calgary experiences third fatal pedestrian collision in 24-hour span

Calgary experienced its third pedestrian fatality within 24 hours last night, when a woman in her 80s was struck by a vehicle in the southwest community of Woodlands.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. yesterday, Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025, the woman was crossing Woodpark Boulevard S.W., at the intersection of 117 Avenue S.W., when she was struck by a 2016 Subaru BRZ, operated by a 20-year-old man, which was travelling northbound on Woodpark Boulevard S.W.

The woman died at the scene. The driver was not injured and remained at the scene.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the collision. Speed is being investigated as a factor.

This incident marks Calgary’s 30th fatal collision of 2025, surpassing last year’s 10-year high, and the 11th fatal collision involving a pedestrian.

“Over the last 24 hours, three people have lost their lives in collisions that are entirely preventable,” says Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward of the Calgary Police Service Traffic Unit. “This is a trend we cannot allow to continue. We have entered a season with shorter daylight hours, and it is more important than ever to stay alert and adjust our habits, regardless of your mode of travel. Please drive according to road conditions, respect posted speed limits, and be on the lookout for both pedestrians and vehicles alike, especially near intersections.”

October is Pedestrian Safety Month in the Alberta Traffic Safety Calendar, and we encourage anyone travelling on Calgary roads to watch out for one another to ensure everyone’s safety.
