City of Calgary declares State of Local Emergency

The City of Calgary has declared a State of Local Emergency (SOLE) to support the Province of Alberta’s efforts to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

As of 1:31 today The City of Calgary has declared a state of local emergency to be more nimble and redirect resources as required to support the provincial declaration of a Public Health Emergency.

The SOLE also allows The City to write local orders to clarify or deal with local challenges and quickly secure supplies needed to run essential services.

This SOLE also helps us to take further actions to protect the most vulnerable in our community.

We are going to be using every tool in our toolbox and working extremely hard in the best interests of our citizens, communities, businesses and the Government of Alberta.

City Operations and Facilities Impacts

The City is still in the early stages of assessing the impacts of the Province’s public health orders to our operations and facilities. Once The Province provides the full written orders The City will review all of our City services to make sure we meet or exceed these restrictions in terms of precautions, and we will be ready when the additional restrictions go into effect on Friday.

City Enforcement Powers

This includes our powers to enforce any provincial orders and clarification around Provincial vs municipal enforcement.

Once we have clarity on these orders, our processes, and operations we will update Calgary.ca/covid19 with any changes.
