Calgarians invited to view commemorative services

Calgarians are invited to the Municipal Building atrium on Monday, Sept. 19 at 9 a.m. local time to watch Canada’s commemorative ceremony in honour of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,  as it takes place at Ottawa’s Christ Church Cathedral.

Television screens and seating will be available in the atrium located at 800 Macleod Trail S.E.

Following the national ceremony, the Government of Alberta ceremony will be available for viewing at 10 a.m. It takes place at the  Alberta Legislature Grounds in Edmonton.

Calgarians may also wish to sign the condolence book available on the west side of the atrium, which will be available until 6 p.m.

The City’s condolence statement and information about the Queen’s five visits to Calgary are available at Calgary.ca/queen.

As part of a national initiative to illuminate buildings and landmarks across Canada, notable Calgary landmarks will be illuminated a royal blue hue:

·       Olympic Plaza (Sept. 10-19)

·       Calgary Tower (Sept. 19)

The royal blue hue is present in the vice regal flags of Canada and mimics the blue jewels worn by Her Majesty in her final official Canadian portrait.

In honour of her late Majesty, the bell at Historic City Hall will ring 70 times beginning at noon on Monday, Sept. 19, to honour the number of years the late monarch reigned. Any places of worship or buildings that have bells or carillons are welcome to join The City in marking this occasion.
