Building Fire in Eau Claire
On January 28th, 2025 at approximately 9:00 PM, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to multiple 911 calls for a building on fire in the downtown community of Eau Claire. On arrival at the 100 block of 2nd street southwest, crews found a multi-story condo complex showing heavy flame and smoke. The site is fenced off and currently being demolished and is unoccupied. Crews were able to quickly assess the portion of the building on fire and search the adjacent areas for possible occupants. No occupants were found in the exposed units and heavy fire hindered the ability to enter the source unit. A second alarm was called due to the size and complexity of the site.
Crews were able to deploy large volume hose lines on the fire, and aerial apparatus to open the roof area to expose the burning attic. Fire had spread throughout the entire unit and crews fought the fire from the outside. The portion of the complex on fire was the last to be demolished on site and was slated for demolition this week. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control and determined that the condition of the building prohibited entry. Fire crews worked with on-site demolition contractors to bring down the damaged building while extinguishing hot spots.
CFD worked with Calgary Police to secure the area and EMS was on standby. Atco and Enmax attended to ensure that all utilities were controlled. Crews will be working through the night taking the building down and ensuring that the fire is fully extinguished. The cause of the fire is under investigation and the site is secured against entry.
