Bearspaw South Feeder Main is operational; water restrictions remain in place while system stabilizes

Crews continue to make progress on the final stages of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main shut down.

Pumps have been turned on, and the Bearspaw South Feeder Main is now operational, but restrictions remain in place while we monitor the pipe and water system to ensure they are stable. If everything goes as planned, restrictions could be lifted as early as tomorrow, April 2. We have crews on standby to be able to respond quickly should any issues arise.

Paving and surface work is on track to be completed today, and we expect to remove traffic detours this weekend along 16 Avenue N.W. and Sarcee Trail N.W.

Water use

Calgarians and our surrounding neighbours continue their green streak, with yesterday’s water use at 499 million litres. Let’s keep the momentum going as we complete this work.

Looking ahead

We are currently planning a pipe inspection from April 9 to 11, where we will place a mechanical device called a pipe diver in a section of the feeder main to assess its condition. Because of the short duration of this work, we do not expect water restrictions to be needed. We will share more details closer to the start date.

We are not planning additional water restrictions until fall, when we will need to shut down the pipe again to connect the new pipe to our water system. However, the risk of another issue or break is always there until the new pipe is operational in December. We are asking people to stay prepared and follow local news, The City’s social media channels and calgary.ca.
