Bearspaw South Feeder Main Construction Progress Continues with 80% of Replacement Steel Pipe Installed

The Bearspaw South Feeder Main Replacement Project continues to advance on schedule, with approximately 80 per cent of the new feeder main pipe now installed in the ground across Stages A and B.

“We are pleased to have more than 90 per cent of the project materials required to complete the project on-site in Calgary, including 93% for the steel pipe,” said Darren Finney, Manager, Major Projects. “Crews continue to make strong progress across both stages, and we remain on track for the new feeder main to be in service by the end of the year.”

Stage A construction update

Stage A construction began in January and used microtunnelling to complete approximately 3.7 kilometres of tunneling beneath existing infrastructure. Installation of both the concrete carrier pipe and the new steel feeder main between the Shaganappi Pump Station and 73 Street N.W. is now complete. Stage A construction remains underway in the area, with crews continuing valve chamber installation, pipe welding and work on supporting infrastructure.

Stage B construction update

Stage B open-cut construction along 34 Avenue N.W. in Bowness began in June and remains on schedule. More than 1.6 km of steel feeder main pipe has been installed, representing approximately 61 per cent of the Stage B alignment. Pipe installation is complete on seven of the 13 blocks with another three currently underway.

Stage B construction continues in sections, with four crews working simultaneously. Roadways, sidewalks and property access are being restored as construction advances. Landscaping restoration will continue into Spring 2027.

Looking ahead

The Bearspaw South Feeder Main will need to be shut down to connect the new feeder main to the existing water system. Pipe tie-in connections at various locations along the new feeder main pipe will include open-cut construction similar to ongoing Stage B construction. Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and indoor water conservation will be required during this time.

Feeder main commissioning is estimated to begin in December. Once the pipe is connected, the water restrictions will be lifted, but we still need to fill, disinfect and complete water quality testing before the new feeder main is in service.

These estimated date ranges are subject to change based on construction timelines and project logistics.

Parkdale Boulevard Repairs

Additional repairs will be completed this fall on the feeder main between the Shaganappi Pump Station and the Memorial Pump Station along Parkdale Boulevard and Memorial Drive N.W.

Recent condition assessments identified locations on the 1500 mm section of the Bearspaw South Feeder main along Parkdale Boulevard that require proactive repairs. While the 1500 mm and the 1950 mm pipe, which is the pipe currently being replaced, are both part of the same feeder main, they are separate sections with different condition profiles. Assessments of the 1500 mm between the Shaganappi Pump Station and the Memorial Pump Station, show it remains in good overall condition and does not require replacement. Instead, targeted repairs at specific locations will help maintain the pipe's long-term reliability.

The repairs will involve 24/7 construction, excavating locations, removing sections of pipe and replacing them with new steel segments.
