ASIRT investigating fatal collision

A man has died and an off-duty police officer has been injured in a collision that occurred after an SUV fled from police. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called to investigate as the death is considered to have occurred during police involvement.

In the early morning hours of Monday, Feb. 10, 2020, a marked police vehicle was in the area of Metis Trail and Country Hills Boulevard N.E., when an interaction with the SUV occurred. Details of that interaction are still being determined and will form part of the ASIRT investigation.

Shortly after, at 3:30 a.m., the SUV travelled westbound on Country Hills Boulevard when it entered the Metis Trail intersection. The SUV collided with a truck going northbound on Metis Trail.

The driver of the SUV, a man, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased on scene. Formal identification of the deceased will be determined during autopsy and is within the purview of ASIRT to release.

The driver of the truck, an off-duty member of the Calgary Police Service, was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition. The officer was on their way home after nightshift when their vehicle was struck. It is believed the officer had no knowledge of the interaction between the patrol vehicle and the truck, prior to being struck.

The intersection where the collision occurred is expected to remain closed for much of today. Drivers are advised to find alternative routes.
