ASIRT investigating fatal collision

A fatal collision occurred tonight, Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020, after officers attempted to stop a vehicle. As such, we notified the Director of Law Enforcement, who directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate the incident.

Earlier this evening, a concerned citizen called in to report an erratic driver in southwest Calgary. Officers in the area were notified of the vehicle’s description and licence plate number. A short time later, just before 7 p.m., patrol officers stopped at an intersection witnessed a vehicle matching the description go through the intersection at a high rate of speed.

The officers tracked the vehicle down and initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle pulled over, however, as officers began to approach it, the vehicle fled away. A few minutes later as they left the area the officers came across a serious collision at the intersection of 85 Street and 17 Avenue S.W.

At this time, it is believed the driver struck two pedestrians, both were declared deceased on scene. The ages and genders of the victims will not be released until next of kin notifications are complete. The driver of the vehicle was extricated from his car by the Calgary Fire Department before being taken to hospital in life threatening condition.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called to investigate as the death is considered to have occurred during police involvement. As such, no further information can be released at this time.
