Update:

Thanks to a tip from the public, Dominik Wesley BIRD, who was wanted on warrants in relation to a residential arson in Varsity, was arrested earlier today, Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022, in northern Manitoba. BIRD, 24, has been formally charged with two counts of arson with disregard for human life, and one count of illegal use of a credit card.

Investigators would like to thank the public, who played a vital role in helping us located BIRD, as well as the Manitoba RCMP for their assistance in conducting the arrest.

Original release below:

Our investigators have identified a suspected arsonist believed to be responsible for two arsons in the community of Varsity earlier this year.

Just after 3 a.m., on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, the Calgary Fire Department was called to a house fire in the 1100 block of Varsity Estates Drive N.W. Subsequent collection of CCTV footage showed a man setting fire to a residential shed before fleeing the area. The fire spread to the garage and house. It is believed the man had been car prowling in the area prior to setting the fire.

We have reason to believe the same person was involved in an additional fire that was reported around 5 a.m., on Saturday, June 4, 2022, in the 1200 block of Varsity Estates Road N.W. It is also believed the man may have been car prowling in the neighbourhood before the fire was set.

After months of investigating, the suspect has been identified as Dominik Wesley BIRD, 24, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. BIRD has been charged with two counts of arson with disregard for human life, and one count of illegal use of a credit card.

Our investigators believe BIRD to have ties to Calgary and Winnipeg and are asking for the public’s help to locate him.

Anyone with information about BIRD’s whereabouts is asked to call the Calgary Police Service non-emergency line at 403-266-1234, or the Winnipeg Police Service non-emergency line at 204‑986‑6222.
