Air guns pose a growing public safety concern in Calgary

We are raising awareness about the public safety risks associated with the use of air guns, including airsoft, pellet and BB guns, following several incidents involving youth in our city.

These incidents have involved individuals openly carrying and discharging air guns in public spaces, leading to emergency police responses, and in some cases, serious injuries. The realistic appearance of many air guns makes it nearly impossible to distinguish them from real firearms, especially in dynamic incidents where bystanders, witnesses and police officers have perceived these weapons as legitimate firearms.

In addition to these very real public safety risks, these weapons can cause significant life-altering harm and the use of them can carry serious consequences, including Criminal Code charges. On average, we respond to at least one incident per day involving air guns.

“When someone sees what looks like a firearm, the fear and trauma they experience is real, regardless of whether the weapon is,” says Staff Sgt. Chris Tudor of the CPS Firearms Investigative Unit. “These incidents can escalate quickly and will result in a serious response from police officers, who must treat every potential threat as real.”

So far this year, half of the incidents involving air guns involved youths

Many of the recent incidents in Calgary have involved youth, who are often unaware of the risks and consequences associated with possessing or displaying air guns in public. As an example, earlier this month, the CPS responded to eight incidents involving youth using air guns in one day alone. These examples included incidents of air guns being discharged at people and vehicles, used in a carjacking and used to intimidate and threaten others.  

“Young people may not fully understand how serious the consequences can be,” says Staff Sgt. Sarah Roe of the Youth Education Unit. “These weapons are not toys and what may seem like a game or a prank can quickly escalate to a very serious situation. We’re working closely with schools and families to help educate youth about these risks.”

Although these weapons are unregulated and can be freely purchased, discharging an air gun within city limits is illegal. Additionally, the use of these weapons to threaten, intimidate or harm someone can result in Criminal Code charges.

In 2024, 817 air guns were seized in Calgary. In the first five months of 2025, 333 air guns were seized.

We all have a role to play in keeping our communities safe. Parents should have conversations with their children so that youth understand the risks of using air guns.

Some important reminders relating to the use of air guns, include:

·       It is illegal to discharge an air gun within city limits.

·       Air guns should be used only in a safe and controlled environment. Youth use of air guns should be supervised.

·       Never carry or display air guns in public.

·       Store air guns securely and out of reach of children.

·       Educate youth on the legal risks and safety concerns related to the use of air guns.
