5 Avenue S.W. lane reversal to be discontinued as of June 10

The City of Calgary is announcing that starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, June 10, traffic setups for the two-way traffic pattern on 5 Avenue S.W. between 5 Street and 11 Street S.W. will come to an end. Traffic will revert to its permanent one-way eastbound traffic pattern.

As a result of the changes, there will be some modifications to parking on 5 Avenue S.W. Parking will not be permitted along this stretch of 5 Avenue S.W. on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to accommodate peak traffic.

“The City of Calgary first trialed the 5 Avenue Lane reversal to optimize use of the existing transportation network and to improve traffic circulation,” says Pat Grisak, Senior Leader of Operational Improvements at Roads. “It has been determined that although the lane reveral has been successful, the cost to sustain it in its current form or to make it permanent is not viable at this time.”

The lane reversal was a temporary installation that used daily traffic set-ups by road crews. The City may consider reinstating a permanent lane reversal in the future, should funding become available.
