25th Anniversary of International Year of Older Persons: Seeking time capsule and friendship quilt contributors from 1999

A time capsule being revealed this fall to celebrate a milestone anniversary of the International Year of Older Persons comes with a call out to Calgarians who contributed treasures and helped create a friendship quilt a quarter of a century ago.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the International Year of Older Persons, The City of Calgary announces plans to revisit and celebrate the legacy of the pivotal 1999 proclamation  including the opening of the time capsule.

The time capsule and friendship quilt served as symbols of community spirit and solidarity with older persons. As Oct. 1, 2024—the International Day of Older Persons—approaches, preparations are underway to honour the contributions of those involved in creating these cherished pieces.

"As we prepare to mark this significant milestone, we are eager to reconnect with individuals who played roles in the creation of the time capsule and friendship quilt," says Raynell McDonough, Team Lead of Community Based Strategies. "Their stories and memories are invaluable as we honour our history and ensure the spirt of connection and community endures for generations to come."

We invite all Calgarians who contributed to the time capsule or friendship quilt in 1999 to participate in the upcoming celebration on Oct. 1, 2024. Whether you were involved in the design and assembly or contributed personal items to the time capsule, your involvement played a crucial part in capturing the essence of that momentous year.

"We encourage past contributors to share their experiences with us," says McDonough. "Your participation will enrich our celebration."
