221 charges laid after shoplifting operation

More than 200 charges have been laid against seven people in a shoplifting series that occurred between March and October of last year, resulting in a loss of $96,000 from Calgary businesses.

On Friday, March 28, 2025, police were called to an Ace Liquor Store located at 722 85 Street S.W. for reports of a shoplifting theft. The investigation connected this theft to 15 similar incidents believed to have been committed by the same individual targeting Ace Liquor locations throughout Calgary and nearby communities. Suspecting additional related offences, police launched an operation to investigate a potential ongoing shoplifting series.

After an eight-month investigation, with assistance from the RCMP and Lethbridge Police Service, investigators now believe that between March and October, seven individuals were responsible for 73 reported shoplifting incidents targeting Ace Liquor and TJX Canada stores, resulting in an estimated loss of more than $96,000 in merchandise. It is believed the seven people were known to each other and worked together to commit the offences.

“This was a complex and resourceintensive investigation that required months of co-ordinated work between our investigators and our policing partners, says Calgary Police Service District 2 Acting Insp. Darrin Chaplin. Shoplifting on this scale is not a crime of opportunity it is organized, deliberate, and it has a real impact on the safety and sustainability of businesses. Holding people accountable for these offences is essential to protecting our community and ensuring that those who repeatedly target Calgary retailers face meaningful consequences.”
