2025 General Election: How to Vote, Check Eligibility, and Access Services

In the Oct. 20, 2025 General Election, Calgarians will vote for their mayor, councillors and trustees. To find when and where to vote:

·       Use the Where do I Vote Tool.

·       Refer to your Voter Guide that was delivered by mail to all Calgary households the week of Sept. 8. Watch for any changes to voting station information from Elections Calgary in the mail and online at electionscalgary.ca/vote.

·       Prior to the Advance Vote, additional copies of the Voter Guide will be made available through a household flyer distribution and select Calgary Transit LRT and bus stops, Calgary Public Library branches, hospitals, grocery stores, cafes and other public community locations.

·       Refer to your Voter Card, which will be delivered to all Calgary households in late September. Your Voter Card lists your designated Election Day voting station.

·       Call 403-476-4100.

There are many ways to vote in the 2025 General Election. The following is a summary of voting opportunities. For full details, see the Voter Guide.

 

Special (mail-in) ballot

A voter who is unable to vote during the Advance Vote or on Election Day may request a mail-in ballot. Requests for mail-in ballots opened Aug. 27, 2025.

Applications for mail-in ballots can be made:

Key dates to keep in mind:

·       Oct. 3, 2025: Last day to request a mail-in ballot package to be sent by mail. Any requests made after this date will need to be picked up in person.

·       Oct. 20, 2025, 10 a.m.: Deadline to request a mail-in ballot package.

·       Oct. 20, 2025, 12 p.m. (noon): Deadline for ballots to be received by Elections Calgary in order to be counted.

Permanent electors register

New this election, municipalities in Alberta are required by provincial legislation to prepare and maintain a permanent electors register of residents who are eligible to vote. The permanent electors register is compiled and revised by Elections Calgary primarily using the information received from Elections Alberta.

Together with acceptable identification (ID), election officials will use the permanent electors register to verify the eligibility of individuals to vote in the October 20, 2025 General Election. The information in the permanent electors register may only be used to verify voter eligibility, and no candidate, official agent or scrutineer shall access or use the permanent electors register, including, without limitation, by taking a photograph or making a copy of the permanent electors register.

If a voter is not listed on permanent electors register, they can still vote! They can add themselves at the voting station by presenting acceptable ID and completing a statement (Form 13). For details, see Confirming voter eligibility below.

Voters may check to see if their name appears on the permanent electors register by:

·       Calling Elections Calgary at 403-476-4100, or

·       Checking when they arrive at their voting station to vote.

Confirming voter eligibility

At the voting station, a voter must produce for inspection one or more of the acceptable forms of ID required by provincial legislation.

Option 1: If the voter’s name appears on the permanent electors register, they must produce one piece of photo ID issued by a Canadian government. For example, a driver’s licence, an Alberta ID card or a Canadian passport.

Option 2: If the voter’s name is not on the permanent electors register, or it is but they do not have photo ID issued by a Canadian government, they must complete a statement (Form 13) and provide:

·       one piece of photo ID issued by a Canadian government that contains the voter’s name and address, or

·       one piece of ID that contains the voter’s name and address, or

·       one piece of ID that contains the voter’s name and have another eligible voter vouch for them.

Voters must complete a statement (Form 13) confirming their eligibility to receive a public or separate trustee election ballot.

Accessible voting

Several supports are available for voters who require assistance to vote in each voting station, including but not limited to:

·       Magnifiers, tactile voting templates, and large-grip pencils available on request.

·       Voters can bring someone to help you vote. Helpers must be age 18 or older and must complete a statement (Form 17), available at the voting station.

·       Voters can ask an election worker to help mark their ballot. All election workers are required to maintain secrecy of the vote.

·       A “Languages Spoken in the Voting Station” sign lists languages spoken by election works, who can help to translate instructions or ballot(s).

·       Voters can use their phone as an assistive device when reviewing forms or marking ballots.

In addition, information about voting station accessibility for each voting station is available on the Where Do I Vote tool. During the Advance Vote from Oct. 6-11, eligible voters may also vote at any Advance Vote location.

Translated versions of the Voter Guide [Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Urdu and Vietnamese] will be available prior to the Advance Vote on the Elections Calgary website.
