144 Avenue N.W.: A vital new connection in Calgary, driving future growth, mobility
The newly expanded and improved 144 Avenue N.W. - the only continuous east-west connection north of Stoney Trail - is now completed and will open to regular traffic on Monday, Sept. 30.
"Today marks a significant milestone for Calgary as we celebrate the opening of the upgraded 144 Avenue N.W.,” says George Chahal, Member of Parliament for Calgary Skyview, on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “The federal government is proud to have supported this project that not only enhances our city’s connectivity, but also fuels economic growth and ensures safer, more efficient travel for residents. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter future."
The improvements, representing a total investment of $61.2 million, include:
• 1.2 kilometres of new arterial road, extending 144 Avenue N.W. from 24 Street N.W. (Panorama Road) through Symons Valley Road to Sage Hill Drive N.W.
• A new bridge over West Nose Creek
• An expansion of Calgary’s Pathway and Bikeway Network
• Utility and public space improvements
The project was supported in part by the Federal and Provincial governments through the Community Building Fund and the Municipal Sustainability Initiative.
“The roadway improvements made to 144 Avenue N.W. will make a difference for Calgary commuters and serve the community through an expansion of Calgary’s multi-use pathway system,” says Ric McIver, Minister of Municipal Affairs for the Government of Alberta.
“Through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, communities are able to support local infrastructure priorities, and I am looking forward to seeing how this project will benefit Calgarians for years to come.”
Designed with Calgary’s future in mind, the expansion will facilitate better access between the new communities of Evanston, Sage Hill, and Ambleton, serving as a crucial connector to area businesses, schools, and social centres. The improved connectivity will strengthen social and economic ties within the area, opening new pathways and opportunities for both residents and businesses.
Infrastructure improvements like this are essential to ensure communities can keep up with housing demand in one of the fastest-growing areas in the city, while providing easy access to services and amenities for residents and reducing traffic congestion.
“The expansion of 144 Avenue N.W. is an important step in supporting our city's growth,” says Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “By improving our road and pathway network, we're helping communities access the services they need and creating a more connected city for everyone.”
