The City of Calgary named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers

The City of Calgary has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2016 based on a national evaluation conducted by MediaCorp Canada Inc. This award recognizes 65 employers across Canada that are leading the way in environmental sustainability. An award presentation took place on Monday, May 16 in Council.

The City of Calgary was selected for its work in managing water use and conservation as part of its Water Efficiency Plan, and for its Environmental Policy, which ensures environmental considerations are included in planning and growth decisions. The awarding body also recognizes Calgary as the first Canadian municipality to adopt a sustainable building policy. To date, 23 City-owned buildings have been built or renovated to meet the highest standards in environmental design.

“As a large municipality delivering services to over 1.2 million Calgarians, we are always looking for innovative ways to reduce our environmental impact,” says Christopher Collier, Director of Environmental and Safety Management. “This award recognizes the progress we’ve made, and puts Calgary on the map as an environmental leader.”

Some of The City’s 2015 environmental initiatives include:

  • Replacing over 7,000 community streetlights with LED fixtures, saving 55 per cent more energy
  • Installing new solar panels on Southland Leisure Centre, which will generate the energy equivalent to powering 24 homes for a year
  • Releasing over 20 types of beetles to eat and control the spread of weeds without using chemicals
  • Re-planting 7,500 trees to replace the storm-damaged urban forest
