Serious Injury Collision

By Duty Inspector October 10, 2012 01:46 AM Category: Police, Public Safety
At approximately 5:57 p.m. on the evening of October 9, 2012, a serious injury pedestrian versus motor vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of 75th Ave and Elbow Dr SW.

At that time, a 66 year old male was crossing Elbow Drive westbound within the marked pedestrian crossing. A 2011 Nissan Versa operated by a 33 year old female was traveling westbound, turning south onto Elbow Dr. It appears that the low sun was in the driver’s eyes and she failed to see the pedestrian in the crosswalk. The vehicle impacted the pedestrian on the driver's side front corner causing the pedestrian to then strike the windshield.

The vehicle continued its turn onto Elbow Drive and came to a controlled stop. The pedestrian fell from the vehicle and came to rest on the road, several meters from the pedestrian crossing.

The pedestrian was initially transported to the Foothills Hospital in non life threatening condition; however, he deteriorated and was placed in a medically induced coma. He is now considered to be in critical condition.

The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section continues to investigate the collision.
Neither speed nor alcohol are considered factors in this collision; however, the low sun is thought to have played a role.
