Guilty plea turns into great working relationship with The City

October 17, 2012 07:35 AM Category: Public Safety
On January 9, 2012, during a severe wind storm, a number of roof replacement materials blew off the roof of the Carpet Mills Outlet, including two spools of ¼ inch wire cable weighing 10 to 20 lbs each and numerous 2 inch of 4 foot by 8 foot Styrofoam insulation pieces.

Arte Roofing was charged and plead guilty to three counts of an unsafe site condition of $10,000 each. Arte Roofing rightly accepted responsibility for ensuring that in the future the roof replacement project and storage of materials were in a safe condition for workers, members of the public and visitors to the location.

As a result of the incident, Arte Roofing & Construction Inc  completed an investigation into the accident  at the Carpet Mills Outlet, and subsequently changed their existing safety procedures for storage of materials on roofs to safeguard against the potential for similarly severe wind storms in the future.

“We are pleased with the response from Arte Roofing as they are working with us to enhance their own safety procedures.   This will help us educate other contractors and owners around the severity of having an unsafe site,” says Kevin Griffiths, Chief Building Official at The City of Calgary  and Manager of Building Regulations “We will continue to send a clear message to contractors and owners that construction site safety in Calgary must be taken seriously”.

The City of Calgary wants to remind owners and contractors they are ultimately responsible for public safety in and around construction sites.
Onward/ We will continue to promote community education to ensure public safety.
