The City of Calgary, with support from the Government of Alberta, has established a Property Tax Relief Program to support residential and non-residential property owners who were displaced for an extended period due to the 2013 June flood. The property tax relief program will officially launch on March 3, 2014.
The Property Tax Relief Program has been created to forgive all property taxes for property owners whose property was severely damaged and who lost the use of their property either permanently or for a period longer than 90 days after the date of the flood.
“We are very pleased to be able to offer this new program to the community,” said Acting Chief Financial Officer, Beng Koay. “It provides some financial relief to help property owners rebuild and we are pleased to be able to offer additional enhancements to the program.”
The program applies to all property taxes and enables property owners whose property was deemed uninhabitable to apply for a property tax break for the time they were out. A 30 day grace period will be added after the property is reoccupied. In addition, all 2013 and current year penalties charged to qualified property tax accounts will be credited back to the accounts and interest will be added to acknowledge the time delay in receipt of the credit.
Those who qualify will be required to complete an application and provide appropriate documentation to show that the property was uninhabitable and could not be occupied for more than 90 days.
Property owners displaced by the flood are encouraged to go to the website at www.calgary.ca/taxrelief (on or after March 3) to review the criteria for program eligibility, the process to apply and how to obtain an application form.
Property owners are encouraged to submit their application and documentation online through The City’s secured website. Alternatively, the application forms and documentation can be submitted by:

“The March 3 launch date gives property owners time to apply for the program so that The City can process tax relief credits before the general mail out of property tax bills in May”, said Pat Brown, Coordinator Tax Account Maintenance.
Business owners whose businesses were closed for an extended period due to the 2013 June flood can contact the Business Licence Registration (BLR) at 403-268-5311 to inquire about adjustments to their Business Tax.
