Man Charged in Connection with Fatal Collision

The Calgary Police Service has charged a man in connection with a fatal collision earlier this morning on Macleod Trail.

Unfortunately, a second person has died as a result of the collision. This afternoon, a 25-year-old woman who was a passenger in the taxi, succumbed to her injuries. She has been identified as Jillian LAVALLEE, of Calgary.

The driver of the taxi died at the scene. He has been identified as Amritpal KHARBANDA, 46, also of Calgary.

At approximately, 2 a.m., this morning, Saturday, May 2, 2015, a 2008 Cadillac Escalade being driven by a 20-year-old man, was heading north on Macleod Trail when it's alleged he ran a red light and struck a 2007 Honda Civic. The Cadillac then struck a 2015 Toyota Prius taxi, with one occupant and the driver inside.

The driver of the Civic, a 64-year-old man, was seriously injured and transported to hospital. Two passengers in the Cadillac were also injured and transported to hospital.

The driver of the Cadillac received minor injuries and was arrested on scene. He has since been charged.

Alcohol and speed on the part of the Cadillac driver are considered factors in this collision.

Ali Alajandro MONTOYA has been charged with impaired driving causing death, and two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm. In light of Ms. LAVALLEE's death, it is expected the charges against MONTOYA will be upgraded in the near future.
